And who am I furious with? My own government. The Dalai Lama is coming to Oslo soon, and they refuse to meet him. The Chinese have treated the Norwegians like pariahs ever since the Nobel Peace Committee gave a Chinese dissident the peace price a few years ago, and they are threatening us now before the Dalai Lama's visit. I realize that we would suffer economically even more than we already have, but I think it is a lousy signal to send to all the dictators of the world that we will bend under pressure. In our neighborhood that is a really dangerous signal to send out right now.

I am so angry I could scream. If rich Norway cannot stand by our principles, I do not see who can.

Well I am just curious, didn't Oslo invite Dalai Lama to come to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his Nobel Peace Prize?

It is a private visit, not an official one...

I see, well best of luck to you guys. I mean, let's face it, most governments suck nowadays.

Fortunately the Ontario government is not that bad....but I feel sorry for those people who have to deal with shitty governments.

I understand. There was a time when I used to get upset at the terrible things my government does. But now they are so common that I'm desensitized. So if you're still getting mad, it's a sign things aren't too bad yet. For what it's worth, Norway has one of the best governments in the world, imo. The corruption index supports my opinion.

We do have one of the best governments in the world - regardless of whether it is a government to the right or to the left. I use to say that Norway's true wealth lies not in our oil, gas or fish, but in the honesty and good sense of our politicians. Many countries have lots of natural resources, the majority have lousy economies, so I do not think I am too far off. And in all fairness, the reluctance to stand up to the Chinese goes for all Norwegian politicians, all through the political spectrum. Our previous foreign minister from the Labour party did the unspeakable, he tried to influence the Nobel Peace Prize Committee to not give the prize to a Chinese. The Chinese had been very clear of what would happen if they did. But the guys that are in office now, I actually voted for, so it makes me extremely angry that they should prove to be such cowards. They do so not have the people behind them on this. What is all our money worth when we still have to ask "how high" when another country asks us to jump? And a country with no understanding of democracy to boot. The governments says that they need to improve relations with China in order to be able to discuss human rights with them.

Right. Course we will totally rule them once we get them to speak to us, after they have made us bend to their will...

Unfortunately, that's the thing. Sure I can vote for another party, but they are just as bad - or worse - in this particular matter. Arghh:mad:

Yeah that's about I feel about it too. When I moved to Thailand many years ago and saw the way things are here it made me miss the way things were run in the U.S. Now I think the Thais have the right idea and a coup would do wonders for the USA.

In our lifetimes ? You'd almost think there are no dissident groups here. They do exist, but are marginalized by the press and infiltrated by the government before they can gather much steam. Plus we're all so happy !
