Very interesting short documentary about the last fluent speaker of Wukchumni, a native language in California: http://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000003061982/who-speaks-wukchumni.html?smid=tw-nytimes Marie spent years working with her daughter and grandson to create a written and audio dictionary of Wukchumni. It's a beautiful, sad story about a dying language and the people working to save it. The connection between grandmother and grandson, speaking Wukchumni while cooking together in the kitchen, is really something special!
Yes, it's very sad. :-( French has killed the other Oïl languages and I find it very sad. of course french didn't kill, it was the languages' policies and stupid hierarchy and status. Also Low German was killed by High German. I prefer Low German, it's friendlier and less snob in my opinion, although I like High German as well.
