Might have been rude to post this off topic vid where you made your comment, but your words immediately reminded me of this "it's all downhill from here" difficult task accomplished no doubt by quite a bit of stick-to-it-iveness

By the way, is the rider our own Cainntear ?

    LOL.

Well as to language learning, it is normally viewed by most learners including myself, as being an all uphill undertaking, albeit with plateaus and as Bob noted, some depressions, along the way. I don't think I can recall a learner instead visualizing it as a mountain where the journey includes both ways to reach the finish, i.e. up one side and down the other to the goal, or even all downhill. Rather the downhill aspect, backsliding, connotes a negative image of loosing what one has gained, just like with Sisyphus. Of course all downhill real fast can be difficult like in that video or with a bobsled. But it seems a different kind of difficult than learning.

On the other hand, if everyone spoke their native language like he speaks English, I think we'd all have an easier time.
