I study translation at Montreal University and I love learning languages on my own (sadly my university only offers English-French translation). I've been learning Icelandic for more than two years, German for a year and a half, Spanish for a year, and I've just started to learn Estonian with a free online course (Keeleklikk.ee). It would be a crime not to learn Estonian when there's such a great resource available! I plan to study translation in Iceland in 2016 so I'm putting a lot of time now into improving my writing and listening skills to prepare for my semester abroad. Icelandic is a difficult but fascinating language: I decided to learn it on a whim but three years later I keep on marveling at the richness of Icelandic language and culture. I read a lot now and I speak as much as I can with teachers and language exchange partners. I've actually found a Vietnamese woman who has lived in Iceland for several years and is now learning German. A guy from Quebec teaching German to a Vietnamese woman, who in return teaches him Icelandic. Pretty cool eh I look forward to reading what other language learners have to say on this forum. I've already come across quite a few very interesting threads. Passez tous une belle journée! Pierre-Emmanuel
That's a nice looking blog you have there. Do you plan on visiting Iceland anytime before you go there to study?
Thanks, everyone! Yes, I'd like to go to Iceland next summer to work on a farm as a volunteer (I found quite a few volunteering opportunities on Workaway). That should help me get my Icelandic to a very high level. Ideally I'd stay there 2-3 months.
Welcome. That's an impressive spread of languages there - it makes me feel like a fraud for spending so much time in Romance languages...!
