The Black Knight from Monty Python came to mind and now I can't think of anything else...

No point guessing. If you know it, you'll recognise it (and some of you will definitely be too young...)

Well I'm not much into stuff like avatars, but everyone else seems to be using them so I succumbed to the peer pressure :). Obviously it is the Tower of Babel, specifically a drawing by the Jesuit linguist and scholar Athanasius Kircher. He interests me since I have studied Chinese and he was a Sinologist. Similarly I am fond of Matteo Ricci, a fellow Jesuit, who was portrayed in a great book by Jonathan Spence, The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci, which is both a history of Ricci and mnemonics which Ricci used to remember Chinese Characters.

Well I am old enough to recognize the cheesy square-ish graphics and date it to the 1980s. And while I saw no point in guessing either, I did see a point in using google to search by image :).

    Thanks!

Well…I made a lot of mistakes. But here's what I wanted to say:

This is my dog, Chase. His fur is brown and curly and his eyes are brown. Chase is a big dog and he has long ears. Chase likes the park and sticks, but he hates leashes and squirrels. Chase is a very good dog.

Yes, I'm currently writing at a kindergarten level. Ha!

I like your dog, too. I understand your dog's attitude towards squirrels. The feeling is probably mutual on the part of the rodents. For revenge, squirrels will drop things on dogs, probably because they can, and will do the same to people as well. Do you feed birds ? I do, and for this reason I also have plenty of squirrels around. If you name your neighborhood's squirrels, you'll be very disappointed, because they don't remain on planet earth for very long. But they are very fecund !

    Chase is cute.

my dog protect us of the squirrels with his barking hahaha, but the squirrels are very cute, I love them. yesterday he barked and then I saw a hedgehog.

My dog is very good also, but sometimes he is naughty for example it's not allowed that our dogs sit on the sofa but my dog like to sit next to me on the sofa. I think that it's nice LOL.

later I will post his photo.

When he was a puppy he wanted to lick my toes, especially when I had pink nail varnish and sandals. Sometimes now also he want to, but I hate the dog lick, for example on the hands or face. Yuck LOL. But I know that it's the dog kisses, so it's cute.

Nope, he's a chesapeake bay retriever. Kind of like an extra-stubborn lab with messy hair. Ha! He's a great dog.

He seems to have more of a bear-like "big dog" muzzle on him than most retriever breeds. Or is that just because he's close to the camera? :)

mine started off as a Joke. We were using the word "comadreja" for a weasely person even though it just means the animal in Spanish. Then I imagined this as a sort of swashbuckling character and made the icon.

I'm thinking of making one that relates to wanderlust somehow.

Athanasius Kircher also wrote an important book about music theory (Musurgia universalis). I had to deal with it while researching my PhD thesis. I didn't know he also was a sinologist. It seems he was an interesting fellow.

I think he's just close to the camera. But he *does* have a pretty big head. When he was a puppy, he was often mistaken for a bully breed - pit, or staffy. He's a big chessie, weighing in at 120 pounds of pure muscle (Ok…well maybe 116 pounds of pure muscle and 4 pounds of pure cookie-fuelled chub).
